Job Description

We're adding a Reactive Hazards Chemist at our Baton Rouge, LA site to report to the Reactive Hazards Process Safety Leader to be responsible for the study of both synthesis chemistry and decomposition reactions to characterize the hazards posed in terms of energy release and pressure generation.
You'll conduct calorimetry experiments, literature reviews, and interface with others to obtain analytical data as needed.
Results of these investigations will be documented in reports and distributed.
You will collaborate with global process teams, Reactive Hazards Process Safety Leader and Manager for completion of investigations.

Responsibilities:

  • Design of experiments to study heat of reaction and kinetics for synthesis reactions.
  • Operation of RC1 reaction calorimeter to study synthesis reactions.
  • Work with process team to acquire materials and develop a plan to run synthesis chemistry in reaction calorimeter.
  • Conduct Lab Safety Audits prior to running RC1 experiments.
  • Design of experiments to study decomposition reactions.
  • Operation of ES-ARC calorimeter as well as other calorimeters such as ARSST, TAM, Calvet, and DSC.
  • Maintain lab in accordance with site policies regarding safety and waste handling.
  • Keep inventory of needed chemicals and calorimeter consumables/spares stocked.
  • Troubleshoot calorimeter performance issues with aid of manufacturer; Submit and track lab maintenance requests.
  • Perform literature reviews on thermal hazards associated with both intended chemistry and secondary reactions.
  • Coordinate with analytical group to run additional experiments as needed to characterize elementary steps of decomposition reactions.
  • Review level of investigation detail needed to characterize reactive hazards with Reactive Hazards Process Safety Leader.
  • Communicate lab status to Reactive Hazards Services Manager so priority can be set on projects.
  • Write reports documenting the results of investigations into synthesis chemistry and decomposition reactions.

Required Skills

  • Experience writing technical reports and presenting data.

Required Experience

  • B.
    S.
    degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or related science
  • 3
    years of laboratory experience performing experiments for fine chemical or pharmaceutical company

Preferred Qualifications

  • Operation of reaction calorimeters such as the RC-1
  • Operation of calorimeters such as ARC, ARSST, TAM, Calvet, and DSC
  • Experience in handling air-sensitive chemicals
  • Experience in characterizing decomposition mechanisms
